! Students are responsible for completing lessons in a timely manner, and taking notes as they work through lessons on the computer.

! A facilitator will be present who gives assistance when necessary, but does not instruct the class as a whole.

Courses Descriptions:

The Summer NovaNET Program will begin on June 20, 2011 and will end on July 28, 2011.  Students must come Monday through Thursday.  There will be two separate sessions each day.  Morning Session is 8:00am to 11:00am.  Afternoon Session is 12:00pm to 3:00pm.  Your session will be selected for you.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Summer NovaNET is a privilege … not a right.  Students are required to attend every session for the entire 3 hours.  Poor attendance will not be tolerated.  Missing more than 10 consecutive minutes of a class is defined as an absence and there are no excused absences or excused tardies in Summer NovaNET under any circumstances.  Students who leave or are absent for more than one day, for ANY reason, will be dropped from the class. Students who are dropped from the NovaNET class will not be allowed to register for any NovaNET course during the reminder of their high school years.

Transportation to and from CFHS for NovaNET Summer School is the responsibility of students / parent(s) or guardian(s).  Students should arrive early enough to be in their assigned seat at the beginning of their assigned session.  Please note: No eating is allowed in the computer lab for any reason, and only drinks in a secure bottle with screw-on cap will be permitted (no cans, cups or fast-food cups).  Please finish any breakfast/lunch prior to entering the building.

Summer NovaNET students are expected to maintain appropriate behavior.  At the discretion of the NovaNET facilitator – a student may be removed for circumstances involving serious or repeated misbehavior, failure to adhere to program attendance requirements, or failure to make adequate progress toward completing the course.  Students who are dismissed from the program will be barred from taking future NovaNET courses.

To earn credit, students must complete all modules with a mastery of 80% and complete a final exam with a score of 70 or better.

***Students must finish the course by July 28th.  There will not be an extended deadline.  If students do not finish the course, they will receive a final mark of 60.

Academic Integrity Policy:

As members of Cape Fear High School, students have a responsibility to conduct themselves with the highest standards of honesty and integrity.  Academic honesty is one of the most important characteristics of any class.  Through the NovaNET Program, students are given the opportunity to achieve academically through an online environment; therefore, it is very important that mutual trust exists between instructors and students.  Accordingly, honesty in all academic matters is expected from all students.  Any attempt to cheat, plagiarize, falsify information, or receive credit for work you did not do will be considered dishonest behavior and will be dealt with accordingly by the instructor and administration.  You will be dropped from the NovaNET program without credit, and lose eligibility to earn credits through NovaNET program in the future.

How do students succeed?

! Since NovaNET courses are self-paced, students who use their time wisely are most likely to succeed. Each course has an average time of completion for each of its modules, and students are encouraged to create a timeline so they can finish on time.

! Taking and keeping notes is critical for success, as modules cannot be accessed during tests, and after they are completed. Notes, books, and the internet may all be used during tests. Students who use these tools are more successful.
Using class time on the computer for anything outside their NovaNET courses will impede student's success. Students need to be responsible for staying on task.
Students who stay on task, use time wisely, keep notes, and ask questions can succeed.

Characteristics of a Successful NovaNET Student:

! Self-motivated – able to work independently, using teacher as a facilitator

! Responsible – attends all scheduled classes

! Self-disciplined – stays on task without disturbing the learning of others

! Goal-oriented – has a specific goal in mind and works diligently toward that goal

! Persevering – works steadily

! Mature – willingly follows all classroom and school policies
